What should I do if I am arrested in Florida?

If you’re arrested in the State of Florida, the single biggest thing that you can do is invoke your right to a lawyer. Do not give the police any additional information other than some very basic things. Obviously, you can give them your name, maybe your contact information, but beyond that, any other information that you give them is potentially risky. There are a number of legal reasons why it’s very important to establish that you wish to speak with an attorney before you discuss anything with police. As an aside, it is very important in the course of an arrest to be polite to the police. If you argue, yell, fight against them, that can actually backfire, result in additional criminal charges, and just generally make it harder on you at the time being.
