What exactly is a federal grand jury investigation?

In the federal system you have to be indicted in order to be prosecuted, so the U.S. Attorneys Office and all the federal agencies appear in front of a grand jury, provide them with evidence to indicate you or others are engaged in criminal activity. That is the grand jury, typically constituted of 24 people who once a week review the information from the various agencies and returning either a true bill, which means that probable cause exists to arrest you for that crime or a no bill, which means that you do not have to worry about going to federal prison.
